Maharashtra is a leading State of India, in agriculture,industry and economy. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is a Capital of Maharashtra, which is also known as a economic capital of India. Power As on January, 1998, the total installed capacity of power was over 12232 MW. Maharashtra has an efficient transmission network throughout the State to ensure a steady supply of power. It is expected that, commensurate with Industrial growth, the state has identified several power projects for development by independent power producers. Telecommunications Maharashtra has the highest no. of direct working telephone lines installed in the country. Over 120 towns in Maharashtra are linked to 210 countries world wide through international subscriber dialing. Telex and Fax facilities are commonplace and Telegraph offices exist in almost all villages. Following International trends,Value added services have also been introduced like radio paging services,cellular telephone services etc. The Central Government owned telecom company for overseas communication, introduced internet services connecting major cities to cyberspace. For data communication, advanced satellite link data transmittal services are also available in major cities. It is not uncommon for software companies to set up their development centers in Maharashtra to develop software and transfer it via satellite to other parts of the world. Human Resources Skilled labour is available in Maharashtra. The proportion of workers in the total population of the State was 43 percent. The State occupies the first position in respect to the total average daily factory employment. Maharashtra also actively supports initiatives for employment creation. Another important feature of the workforce in Maharashtra is its quality and productivity. The existence of an efficient educational infrastructure and opportunities for on the job training has made it one of the most productive units in the country. Educational Facilities Maharashtra boasts of one of the largest education networks in the country. Maharashtra is an educationally advanced State. It has a large number of Management Institutes and Engineering and Polytechnic Colleges which provide highly qualified technical and Managerial Staff to run Industrial and business enterprises. Transportation Network Maharashtra has an efficient network of all weather roads and railways. Most cities are connected by Air. The total road length in Maharashtra is approximately 2,46,000 Kms. In a total land area of about 3,08,000 Sq.Kms. This includes 3000 Kms.of national highways, 30,500 Kms. of State highways and 30,000 Kms. of district roads. Maharashtra also has an efficient public transportation system run by the State Owned Corporation with approximately 15500 buses that connect all the towns and villages of the State and transports almost 7.5 Million passengers everyday. In addition, cities have private and non private taxis, auto rickshaws and intra-city buses which run efficiently. Maharashtra has 5554 Kms. of Railways. All major cities in the State are connected by the country's railway network.There are a number of deluxe trains plying on many of the important routes originating from Mumbai. Most of the large cities in Maharashtra are accessible by Air. Mumbai has Airports at Sahar(International) and India and all international destinations are linked to Mumbai through direct flights. Endowed with a coastline of 720 Kms. long, Maharashtra has several natural ports. The two principal ports are located in Mumbai - The Jawaharlal Nehru Port(at Uran, outside Mumbai) and the Mumbai Port,are under the control and supervision of the Government of India. Collectively both ports handle the largest proportion of the country's foreign trade. Information Technology The use of IT in Government has improved quality and productivity of services rendered by Government and has brought IT to the common man. |
